For Tirso George, Founder of San Francis Imports, a handshake still means everything. While formal contracts are part of the process, he believes integrity is the foundation of good business—especially in the Catholic religious goods industry. His three sons—Tirso Jr., Carlos, and Oscar—who are actively involved in the business, share the same values. That commitment ensures a seamless transition when the day comes for George Sr. to step back.
Raw Determination & A Clear Focus on the Goal
There’s a meaningful reason behind George Sr.’s handshake approach to business. More than 30 years ago, he fled Fidel Castro’s communist Cuba with his wife, Matilde, and their children, eventually settling in San Francisco. Determined to build a better life, he worked two full-time jobs to support his family. With Matilde’s help, he began a small side business selling religious goods door-to-door from the trunk of his car—planting the seeds for what would become San Francis Imports.
His first customers were primarily Spanish-speaking communities in places like San Jose, Fremont, and Modesto. George Sr. took great pride in the trust they placed in him. A deeply faithful man, he believed that inspirational religious gifts should be both meaningful and affordable. His philosophy was simple: if a gift inspires someone spiritually, it should be within their reach.
That unwavering commitment, paired with his tireless work ethic, has remained the foundation of San Francis Imports, Inc. for over three decades.
